Special features in Ouroboros Syndrome Game

A bit of an early post, but I wanted to lay out the basic help infrastructure to make the upcoming release day a bit easier. Feel free to contact me or leave a comment if you have questions about some features or mechanics.

The game has custom controls and features that will make your playthrough more enjoyable. Here I give a quick recap along with some standard RPG Maker’s functions to help players in their journey.

Autosave features

The game will use the 30th slot for auto-saving each time you will move between maps. There‘s no difference between the global map, indoors or outdoor areas. Slot 29 will be used each time the player will talk to an NPC which can initiate a mission. This slot allows players to load to the moment before you ventured off to the gig if you decide to do so for any reason.

You can use all other slots for your own goals. It’s not advised to use the 29th and 30th slots for manual saving because the game will overwrite them without warnings.

Dialogue features

You can hide the dialogue/message box by pressing Shift. No clicks or buttons will force the text to go further before you press Shift again. This may be useful during H scenes and other moments where you want to check graphic details, but the text box obscures them.

Kira’s sprite is visible on the map and some players may want to hide it during travels. You can do this by pressing Q. Press Q again to return the picture back to its original place. On mobile devices, you can get the same result by tapping a button close to Kira’s sprite. Ouro will remember your choice and will resume your preferred style after dialogue scenes.

Combat features

If your enemy is weaker than you - activate auto-battle by pressing Control. In this mode, your character will use melee attacks each round until you win or press Control again. Use this feature to accelerate easy battles yet it’s not advised for bosses.

Holding Enter button will accelerate all combat animations and sound effects. If you feel it takes too long to finish an enemy off - try it out. The same goes for dialogues.

Crafting and upgrading your gear

Ouro features crafting and updating functions. This activity requires a workbench and one will be introduced during the intro tutorial. After some plot progression, you will be able to buy a workbench and place it inside Kira’s home for convenience.

After activating the workbench, depending on Kira’s skills and knowledge, you will have options to upgrade your gear, make consumables, create upgrade modules or components for them and, finally, make new equipment. Getting databases will unlock new formulas.

Consumables include all kinds of usable items like medpacks and energy cells. You can use upgrade modules to improve your gear depending on their quality and traits. Please note, some of such modules are only available through crafting via different parts.

Each weapon has several slots for upgrades. These are grip, body and scope. Assault and marksman rifles are bigger and have some space to fit something under-barrel. 1 mod for each type.  It would be silly to see a gun with three scopes, ain’t it?

You can scavenge for materials during missions, exploration and other activities. I won’t limit the grand total of parts you can get in the game and even if you’ll try to craft all available options, ”free roam” maps will provide you with replenishable stock of materials. If you like the idea of tuning your equipment for your playstyle or even making different sets for different goals - go for it.

Hacking minigame

Aside from various puzzles, Ouro features a hacking minigame. Fallout fans will feel right at home since the logic is similar.

Hacking something with a decent enough skill will bring up the “bypass” interface with several answer options. Depending on the device’s protection strength, the number of said options increases. Regardless, one of them is the correct password and you need to find out which one it is by checking how many symbols match between the right answer and the one you picked. Planning ahead is the key.

Don’t worry if you got locked out of some terminal or console. Later in the game, you will be able to get items to unlock them again. Just take things slowly and get the idea behind the minigame during the intro section.

Gallery/H Scene features

Ouro’s gallery has global links to unlocked scenes. This means you don’t need to unlock specific scenes during your current playthrough, just a save with unlocked H events. Then you can watch them via the gallery.

Ouro supports an additional feature for players who want to shorten the length of H scenes in the game. It’s available through the main options menu and defaults to “Full” setting. There are 3 options: “Full”, ”Medium” and “Short”.

All versions use the same graphics and differ only in the text length. You can switch between versions any time you like. This setting affects both gallery and “on-map” H scenes. All scenes support this feature.

The gallery also features a mode for players who want to watch the animation with no narrative bits. It’s called ”Animation Only” and you can activate it via the main gallery menu. This mode uses the same checks as the usual scene replay so you don’t have to do anything special to use it. All scenes support this feature.

H scenes have partial voice support. If you don't like it - you can mute all H sounds in the options by tuning down sex effects and sounds in the main options menu.

Also, you can disable sound  support in the ”Animation only” mode in the gallery. The default option is full support with background sounds. Please note, this toggle only affects "Animation only" mode in the gallery. Ouro won’t forbid you  from switching it anytime you want - just use the ”Options” menu.

There is a custom parameter in the main options menu called “Watched Scenes”. It has 2 choices: “Skip” and “Watch”. The first option will skip scenes that you already watched and give a single “summary” picture. The second one will play the entire scene as if it’s the first time. You can change this option any time you want from the options menu. This option doesn’t affect gallery mode. All scenes support this feature.

Some scenes will have a warning about a specific fetish/kink that may not be appreciated by all player. In this case, the game will ask if you want to watch this scene.

Answering “Skip it” will prevent any content with this fetish from appearing in the game. Don’t worry, such scenes will still be available from the gallery if you reconsider later.

Transferring saves between versions

Since Ouro is still in active development, new releases come up every month. Naturally, you can use your older saves from the previous version in new updates. To do this, you need to copy your entire save folder into the new release. That’s it, load up your save and continue the story.

Copying only some files will cause problems because the game uses global data to function properly - don't forget to copy your entire save folder.

Miscellaneous features

Ouro doesn’t have a journal system, so I implemented the “Help” button in the menu. Pressing it will prompt Kira to remind you of the main goals you need to achieve in order to progress the main quest line and optional plots. Or she will say you cleared it all already.

And let’s finish with standard options. You can sprint/dash by holding Shift button or enabling “Always Dash” in the options menu. You can skip dialogues and scenes (even unwatched ones) by holding Enter while the text box is up.

All interface elements respond to mouse and cursor so don’t feel forced to use the keyboard.
