Smart phones can detect earthquakes thanks to the dynamometers in every device. When an earthquake is detected, users with the application installed are immediately alerted. Since the earthquake waves move at a certain speed (5 to 10 km/s), people who have not yet reached the damaging waves of the quake can be alerted.
